All Fridays in Lent and Good Friday
PITTSTON— February 3, 2025 — St. John the Evangelist Parish, 35 William Street in Pittston, will hold Lenten Food Sales each Friday from March 7 through April 18 (Good Friday).
This year, we will be selling potato pancakes at 3 for $5.00 and your choice of take-and-heat red pizza or white pizza with broccoli for $15.00 a tray. Pickup will be from 3:30 to 6:00 PM each Friday in the Msgr. Bendik Pastoral Center (entrance on Church Street).
Please call the parish office at 570-654-0053 by Thursday of each week to place your orders.
On Sunday, October 27 at 2:00 PM, all are invited to an Organ Concert for All Hallows Eve at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church, 35 William Street in Pittston.
Parish organist and music director Michael Sowa will present this program featuring organ music that is both powerful and peaceful for the upcoming celebrations of All Saints Day and All Souls Day, with a little bit of Halloween mischief, just for fun!
During the concert, we will hear readings about death and life and the celebrations of these days.
A free-will offering will be accepted.
The parishes of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph Marello in Pittston will co-sponsor “An Evening of Song” on Saturday, October 19 at 7:00 PM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street in Pittston, presented jointly by the St. Thomas Gospel Choir of Philadelphia and Cantores Christi Regis of King’s College in Wilkes-Barre.
The St. Thomas Gospel Choir is under the direction of Walt Blocker, is accompanied by keyboards and drums, and shares its music at over fifty services, programs, concerts, and celebrations every year.
Joining the STGC this year are the members of Cantores Christi Regis of King’s College under the direction of Rob Yenkowski.
The choirs will perform both individually and together throughout the evening.

On Wednesday, June 26 at 7:00 PM, the music ministries of St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph Marello Parishes in Pittston will present their annual Independence Day Concert at St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street in Pittston.
Members and friends of the parish choirs will sing, accompanied by organ, piano, brass quartet, and percussion. There will also be instrumental solos. Featured guests at this year’s program will be The Lyric Consort, a local a cappella choir which will perform American works under the direction of Christopher Gallo. Guest instrumental ensemble for the concert will be: Dale Chase and Dan Coyle (trumpets), Chuck Smith and Don Williams (trombones), and Monica Spishock (percussion). Veterans of the U.S. Armed Services will receive special recognition during the concert.
A free-will offering will be accepted.
St. John the Evangelist Parish, 35 William Street in Pittston, is holding Lenten Food Sales on all Fridays in March, including Good Friday, with pickup from 4 to 5:30 PM in the Msgr. Bendik Pastoral Center on Church Street. This year we are selling potato pancakes (3 for $5) and take-and-heat haluski ($7 a quart). On March 22 and 29 only, we will be selling nut and lekvar (prune) rolls from Kieran’s Bakehouse in Plains ($7/half and $14/whole). St. John the Evangelist Parish, 35 William Street in Pittston, will host its first-ever Meditative Music Series on three Fridays during Lent. Come to listen and pray as local musicians offer music fitting for the Lenten season beginning at 4:45 PM on Fridays, March 1, 8, and 15 in St. John the Evangelist Church.
The series will include guitarist Ed Sankus on March 1, violinist Lynn Hurst accompanied on piano by parish music director Michael Sowa on March 8, and organ music by Michael Sowa on March 15.
Following the programs of music on these Fridays, all are invited to remain for Stations of the Cross beginning at 5:30 PM.
On Sunday, February 25 at 3:00 PM, members of Cantores Christi Regis of King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, will present Lenten Taizé Prayer at Saint John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street in Pittston. These students, under the direction of Mr. Robert Yenkowski, will lead us in sung prayer in a candlelit church.
All are invited to attend.
On Tuesday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m., the music ministries of Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Joseph Marello Parishes in Pittston, joined by musicians from the community, will present a concert for Independence Day at Saint John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street in Pittston.
Members and friends of the parish choirs will sing, with some opportunities for all in attendance to sing along. Instrumentalists will be Dale Chase and Chuck Smith (brass), Cindy Thomas (flute and piccolo), and Monica Spishock (percussion). Vocal soloist will be Erin Johnson.
The program will be under the direction of Michael Sowa and Brandon Jopling, directors of music at St. John the Evangelist and St. Joseph Marello Parishes, respectively.
A free-will offering will be accepted.
