“The catechesis of adults … is the principal form of catechesis, because it is addressed to persons who have the greatest responsibilities and the capacity to live the Christian message in its fully developed form.”

Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States
In the document, Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, the Bishops of the United States state: “We are entering a period of new vitality for the Church, a period in which adult Catholic laity will play a pivotal leadership role in fulfilling the Christian mission of evangelizing and transforming society. For adults to fulfill their roles in this new era of the Church, their faith formation must be lifelong, just as they must continue to learn to keep up in the changing world.”
Three goals for adult faith formation emerge in this pastoral plan:
- Invite and Enable Ongoing Conversion to Jesus in Holiness of Life.
- Promote and Support Active Membership in the Christian community.
- Call and Prepare Adults to Act as Disciples in Mission to the World.
