Documentary on the Diocese of Scranton
WVIA Public Media, in partnership with the Diocese of Scranton, is producing a one-hour documentary on the history of the Diocese. It is sponsored in part by Grimm Construction, Inc., Waymart.
The documentary highlights the people, places, and events that have shaped the Catholic Church in northeastern and north central Pennsylvania – from the earliest days of settlers and missionary bishops and priests in the wilderness, to the creation of the Diocese in 1868, to its growth over the last 150 years.

Cathedral Celebrates Sesquicentennial in Song
The Cathedral of Saint Peter celebrated in song the Sesquicentennial of the Diocese with a concert titled “How Firm a Foundation: A Musical Celebration of Our First 150 Years” presented on Friday, April 13. The concert featured the Choral Society of Northeast Pennsylvania. Formed in 1999 through the merger of the former Singers’ Guild of Scranton, Wyoming Valley Oratorio Society, and Wyoming Valley Children’s Chorus, the Choral Society of Northeast Pennsylvania has quickly established itself as a regional force for choral performance and arts education. In 2001 the Society also formally recognized the many contributions being made by members of the former Hazleton Oratorio Society. Read more…

Faithful Celebrate Mass of Thanksgiving on Anniversary Sunday of Diocese Founding
In a visible sign of the Church as the People of God, faithful from throughout northeastern and north central Pennsylvania gathered in the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Scranton to participate in the Mass of Thanksgiving to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Scranton.
The Mass on March 4, 2018 was celebrated on the Sesquicentennial Sunday marking the formal establishment of the Diocese by Pope Pius IX on March 3, 1868. Read more…
Heritage of Helping – Day of Service Will Honor Diocesan Tradition of Responding to Community Needs
On March 3, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Diocese of Scranton, Catholic Social Services led a Diocesan-wide Day of Service – an outreach of commonality and gratitude to the many worthy organizations that share the Church’s commitment to the people of the region. Metropolitan of Pennsylvania To Celebrate Anniversary Mass
The Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., D.D., Archbishop of Philadelphia and Metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of Pennsylvania, made his first visit to the Diocese of Scranton when he serves as principal celebrant of the Pontifical Mass marking the actual 150th Anniversary Sunday of the founding of the Diocese. ‘There Is One Body and One Spirit’ – Commissioned Hymn to be Premiered at Diocesan Anniversary Mass
Faithful in the region will have the opportunity to sing a new song to herald the Sesquicentennial of the Diocese.
A new hymn, entitled “There Is One Body and One Spirit,” will be premiered at the Mass on March 4, 2018, in the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Scranton to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the Diocese. Read more…

The Diocese of Scranton’s Sesquicentennial Celebration continued with a Pontifical Mass at the Cathedral of Saint Peter marking the actual Anniversary Sunday of the founding of the Diocese. Father Patrick Peyton Now ‘Venerable’; One Step Closer to Sainthood
VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis recently advanced the sainthood cause of Holy Cross Father Patrick Peyton, thus declaring “venerable” the famous Catholic media pioneer known the world over as “The Rosary Priest” whose journey in America as a young Irish immigrant began in Scranton.
During a papal audience in December with Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes, the pope approved the decree recognizing the heroic virtues of Father Peyton along with those of Saint John Paul II’s mentor, Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski. Read more…
