Event Details

St. Michael the Archangel in Pittston is holding a prayer service for Ukraine. The gathering is scheduled for 5 pm,  May 9th, at St. Michael's in Pittston.  The date was chosen because May 9th is Victory Day in Russia, commemorating the victory over the Axis powers in 1945.  It has traditionally been an occasion for military parades demonstrating Russian military might.  Power that is now being used to try to bomb Ukraine into submission, or out of existence altogether. From 5 - 6 pm the public will be invited to gather in the main sanctuary of the church for a program of music and reflection.  Three speakers will reflect on the history and culture of the Ukrainian people, including its multi-ethnic dimension (Russian, Ukrainian, Jewish), and the music too will reflect this diversity (traditional but "secular" music, religious hymnody, and klezmer music). At 6 pm folk will be invited downstairs to the parish hall for more informal fellowship (including some light food, and more music), where there will also be a photographic display highlighting different cultural traditions in Ukraine.
