Gorzkie zale, the traditional Polish-language Lenten devotion known as the “Bitter Lamentations,” will be held on Sunday, March 22, at 3 p.m. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 215 Lackawanna Ave., Dupont. The devotion is a sung reflection on the Passion of Christ and his Sorrowful Mother. Msgr. John Sempa, pastor of Corpus Christi Parish, West Pittston, will be the guest homilist. Msgr. Sempa is an Avoca native who was baptized at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Dupont.
Anthony George, organist and music director for Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Dupont, and Queen of the Apostles Parish, Avoca, will lead the combined parish choirs in the sung devotions. The devotions will take place within the context of a Eucharistic Holy Hour which will conclude at 4 p.m.
Area clergy will assist at the devotions, including Msgr. Neil Van Loon, V.F., pastor of St. Paul Parish, Scranton, Rev. Michael Wurtz, CSC, professor of Theology at King’s College, Wilkes-Barre, Rev. Michael Drevitch, assistant pastor of Corpus Christi Parish, West Pittston, and Rev. Eric Fasano, V.G., of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, NY. Rev. Thomas Petro, J.V., host pastor and Section Prior of the Diocese of Scranton Division of the Eastern Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, invites all Knights and Dames of the Order to vest in their regalia and participate in the devotions.
A light reception will follow in the church hall. All are invited to attend.
