Event Details

On Tuesday, September 28, the Cathedral celebrates 137 years of faithful service to the people of the Diocese of Scranton. Consecrated the Cathedral of Saint Peter by Scranton's first bishop, the Right Reverend William O'Hara on September 28, 1884, the Cathedral had been Saint Vincent de Paul Church for seventeen years. The change of name calls to mind Christ's words to Saint Peter: "Upon this rock, I will build my church. (Mt 16:18)" This occasion is celebrated as a Solemnity within the Cathedral and as a Feast in all parishes in the Diocese of Scranton. Visit stpeterscathedral.org/anniversary to experience the history of your Cathedral through words and images and visit us across our social media channels for exclusive content, including an anniversary message from Monsignor Rupert. Join us for the celebration of Mass on Tuesday, September 28 at 12:10 p.m. in-person or virtually. Psalms and readings proper to the anniversary will be used.
