POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION:                             Safe Environment Coordinator
DEPARTMENT:                    Office of Human Resources
REPORTS TO:                       Diocesan Secretary for Human Resources
CLASSIFICATION:               Full Time, Exempt

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

Diocesan staff member charged with implementation, maintenance, and oversight of the Safe Environment Program in accordance with the requirements set forth within the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People promulgated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Charter Compliance:
a. Possess a thorough knowledge of the compliance requirements of the USCCB Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
b. Serve as advisor, coordinator and primary point of contact for activities related to safe environment education according to Charter requirements.
c. Develop, update and implement systems for tracking compliance for all entities located within the Diocese of Scranton.  This includes but is not limited to mandatory training, mandatory background checks and adherence to the Code of Conduct.
d. Revise and maintain safe environment policies and reference materials in collaboration with the Bishop, Vicar General, Secretary for Human Resources and Diocesan Review Board.
e. Design and execute regular site audits at parishes, schools and other entities to assure compliance with safe environment policies.
f. Submit required documentation to USCCB Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People.
2. Safe Environment Screening and Training:
a. Provide education for adults on child protection including the prevention, identification and reporting of child abuse
b. Oversee the implementation of youth training programs for child protection instituted by the Diocese
c. Manage safe environment training certification records.
d. Process background checks.
e. Initiate strategies for effective and efficient delivery of services.
3.  Collaborative Relationships:
a. Serve as primary diocesan contact for the USCCB Committee for the Protection of Children and Young People
b. Function as a resource for parishes, schools and diocesan organizations regarding the creation and maintenance of safe environment programs.
c. Establish ongoing communication with Safe Environment Managers in locations throughout the Diocese.
d. Collaborate with the Office for Parish Life and the Diocesan Schools Office to address safe environment needs.
e. Lead and coordinate activities of the Safe Environment Advisory Committee.
f. Collaborate with the Chancellor/Chancery Office to ensure adherence to the diocesan speaker policy.
g. Work with the Bishop’s Office and Vicar for Clergy Office to make sure all requirements are in place for religious order priests, international priests and visiting priests from outside the Diocese of Scranton.
h. Attend national or statewide meetings/conferences as time and funds permit.
Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education, Theology or a related field required.  Master’s degree preferred.  Minimum of five years’ experience in position of leadership within a large, complex organization.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:

  • Practicing Catholic with good understanding of the church’s structure and terminology
  • Knowledge of the nature of child abuse
  • Excellent organizational, administrative and interpersonal skills
  • Strong computer proficiency particularly with Office365 applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point)
  • Familiarity in Web Design/WordPress a plus
  • Capable of working independently
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and compassion
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point a plus
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout the eleven counties of the Diocese of Scranton
  • Possess a high degree of flexibility to achieve objectives and meet goals
