Holy See Appeals For Nuclear Disarmament
Archbishop Celestino Migliore, the permanent observer of the Holy See to the UN, intervened before the 61st session of the General Assembly on all disarmament and international security items.
He said: “The Holy See takes this opportunity to appeal again to the international community to establish an obligatory legal framework aimed at regulating the trade of conventional weapons of any type, as well as regulating the know-how and technology of their production.”
With reference to nuclear weapons, he stressed the urgent need for dialogue on this issue. He said: “My delegation agrees that the international community seems almost to be sleepwalking down the path (...), in which rapidly growing numbers of states feel obliged to arm themselves with nuclear weapons and the threat of nuclear terrorism grows.”
Archbishop Migliore emphasized the fact that the Holy See has, many times “asked that those governments which openly or secretly possess nuclear arms, or those planning to acquire them, agree to change their course by clear and firm decisions, and strive for a progressive and concerted nuclear disarmament. Policies of nuclear deterrence, typical of the Cold War, can and must be replaced by concrete measures of disarmament based on dialogue and multilateral negotiations.”

Beginning Experience Weekend Set for November 3
Beginning Experience, a peer ministry for the divorced, widowed and separated, is offering a weekend program on Nov. 3-5 at Fatima Center in Dalton. The process of the weekend enables men and women suffering the loss of a relationship to put closure on their past and move toward renewed hope.
The loss of a spouse is one of life’s most traumatic experiences, and it can result in nearly unbearable feelings of loneliness and grief. The Beginning Experience weekend program creates an atmosphere of care and concern that helps grieving persons emerge from the darkness of grief into renewed hope.
The weekend consists of talks given by team members followed by personal private reflection and small group sharing. It is a healing journey through which a deep sense of community develops. For information, please contact Shirley at 654-9523 or Gregory at 868-8740.

Rachel’s Vineyard Offers Post-Abortion Healing
A Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat will be held Nov. 10–12. This confidential weekend retreat facilitates spiritual and emotional healing for men and women struggling with the pain of abortion.
Exercises based on Scripture are designed to help participants experience God’s mercy and compassion, and to reconcile with their Church, their child, and with themselves. The retreat concludes with a Memorial Service and Mass of Resurrection.
Financial assistance is available. For registration information contact Denise Rowinski at 570-822-7118, ext. 307, or drowinski@csswb.org. For other retreat locations contact 1-877-HOPE-4-ME, or www.rachelsvineyard.org.

Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend Being Held in Diocese
A Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend will be held in the Diocese on Nov. 10-12 at the Villa of our Lady Retreat House in Mount Pocono. WWME is a Catholic movement (open to all faiths) designed to enrich and deepen the relationship of married couples.
Mary Ann Paulukonis, family life director of the Diocese of Scranton, stated, “Worldwide Marriage Encounter has for many years provided marvelous marriage enrichment in our Diocese. WWME has helped hundreds of couples strengthen their love, thereby creating happier and healthier homes for their children. I wish every couple would attend a weekend to focus on their marriage. Many years ago my husband and I attended a WWME weekend and were rather skeptical. However, after attending the weekend we were delighted about what it did for our relationship.”
Earlier this year, Franciscan Retreats presented its 2006 award to Worldwide Marriage Encounter.
For more information about WWME or to register for the weekend, call 800-787-7679 or visit the website at www.wwme-nepa.org.
