MISSION STATEMENT
We the Catholic faithful of the Diocese of Scranton,
in union with our Holy Father, the Pope, are called
through baptism to share in the mission which Jesus
Christ has entrusted to the One, Holy, Catholic and
Apostolic Church. Priests, deacons, religious and laity,
under the leadership of our Bishop, cooperate to
proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the teaching of
the Church, to celebrate the sacraments, especially the
Eucharist, for the salvation of all, and to witness by
grace to the Kingdom of God so as to promote a culture
of life, justice and peace.

Bishop To Initiate Forty Hours Devotions |
To perpetuate the
graces of the Year of the Eucharist, Bishop
Joseph F. Martino has implemented a renewal of
the Forty Hours devotion in all parishes of the
Diocese of Scranton.
The Bishop will initiate
this renewal by participating in three Forty
Hours devotions, one in each of the pastoral
regions: this Sunday, Oct. 23, at Mater Dolorosa
Church in Williamsport; Monday, Oct. 24, at Most
Precious Blood Church in Hazleton; and Tuesday,
Oct. 25, at St. Patrick Church in Wilkes-Barre.
Each devotion begins at 7 p.m.
This devotion consists
of a 40-hour period during which the parish
conducts a celebration centering on the Word of
God and preaching, the Sacrament of
Reconciliation, and adoration of the Most
Blessed Sacrament. The Episcopal Vicars will
coordinate scheduling of the devotions and
assist with implementation in the parishes
within their respective pastoral regions.
As another pathway to
ongoing Eucharistic devotion, the Bishop has
asked that a decade of the Rosary be prayed
prior to every Mass of obligation. The intention
of this Rosary is to be for an increase of
vocations to the Diocesan priesthood and
religious life.

Catechists’ Convocation October 29 in
Wilkes-Barre |
Catechists from all
regions of the Diocese will gather in
Wilkes-Barre for their annual convocation on
Saturday, Oct. 29. This year’s theme is “The
Eucharist: Source and Summit of the Christian
Life.”
The day will begin with
Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Mary of the Immaculate
Conception Church. Bishop Joseph F. Martino is
the principal celebrant and homilist.
The program will
continue at Bishop Hoban High School. Father
Charles P. Connor, Diocesan historian and rector
of St. Peter’s Cathedral, will explore the
convocation theme in his keynote address to the
catechists. Workshops will be held on a variety
of topics: basic catechetical skills, liturgy,
social concerns, autism, music ministry,
incorporating Scripture and the Catechism, adult
education, and approaches for kids and teens.
A special session,
“Get Them Excited About the Eucharist,” will
be held at 1 p.m. for students preparing for the
sacrament of Confirmation. Joseph Farris, a
middle school religion teacher at St. Peter
Catholic School in Greenville, N.C., will be the
featured speaker.
Catechists, Catholic
school teachers, and parish personnel, including
liturgists, youth and young adult, pro-life,
family life and social concerns ministers, and
those who work with the deaf and persons with
disabilities, are encouraged to attend. For more
