Priests, deacons, religious and laity, under the leadership of our Bishop, cooperate to proclaim the Gospel in accordance with the teaching of the Church, to celebrate the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, for the salvation of all, and to witness by grace to the Kingdom of God so as to promote a culture of life, justice and peace.

Democracy Succeeds Only When Based On Truth
Pope Benedict XVI, in a recent address to the Canadian (Ontario) Conference of Catholic Bishops, said that “the fundamental task of the evangelization of culture is the challenge to make God visible in the human face of Jesus. The split between the Gospel and culture, with the exclusion of God from the public sphere, is one of the impediments to the spread of Christ’s Kingdom.”
Referring to government policies such as the redefinition of spouse and the legal right to abortion, he noted that the misapplication of the principles of tolerance and freedom of choice can have negative consequences for society.
“Democracy succeeds,” the Holy Father insisted, “only to the extent that it is based on truth and a correct understanding of the human person. Catholic involvement in political life cannot compromise on this principle. ... In your discussions with politicians and civic leaders I encourage you to demonstrate that our Christian faith, far from being an impediment to dialogue, is a bridge, precisely because it brings together reason and culture.”

Commitment Weekend Is Critical To Appeal
The Diocesan Annual Appeal enters its most important phase this weekend (Nov. 4-5) when parishes conduct their in-pew pledge process at all Masses of obligation.
Commitment Weekend, as these two days are known, is the period when many parishioners decide to make a pledge to the Appeal. These pledges are critical to the success of the campaign.
As of Oct. 30, the Appeal had reached $3,014,260 through 19,897 pledges received. The total raised thus far is 57.4% of the goal.
The Appeal goal this year is $5,250,000, which is $850,000 higher than last year. Parish goals have been increased proportionally in order to reach the overall goal.
The increased goal, and the many services and programs that depend on the Appeal for support, underscore the importance of Commitment Weekend.

Day of Reflection on Eucharistic Spirituality
The Pastoral Formation Institute will conduct a Day of Reflection at Fatima Renewal Center, Dalton, on Saturday, Nov. 11. Presenter for the day will be Father Pio Mandato, FMHJ, of St. Joseph Hermitage, Laceyville. His topic will be “Eucharistic Spirituality and Saints of the Eucharist.”
The Day of Reflection will center on the Eucharistic presence of Jesus. It will also afford opportunity to reflect on a number of saints who are recognized for their own devotion to the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. Liturgy will be celebrated and the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available.
To register, contact Fatima Renewal Center at 570-563-8500.

Enthronement Guild to Host Holy Hour
The second annual Mass and Holy Hour hosted by the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart Guild will be held at St. Maria Goretti Parish at 2 p.m. on Nov. 26 in honor of the Feast of Christ the King.
Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn, pastor of St. Rose of Lima Parish in Carbondale, will conduct the Holy Hour immediately after the Mass and offer his reflections on devotion to the Sacred Heart in his talk entitled “Christ Love: The Heart of the Matter.”
The Mass will be concelebrated by Father Dan Toomey, spiritual moderator of the Guild, and Monsignor Quinn.
The combined youth group of St. Rocco and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Pittston and St. Anthony in Exeter, under the direction of Oblates of St. Joseph Father, the Very Rev. Paul McDonnell, will conduct a crowning in honor of Jesus as Christ the King during Mass.
The Enthronement of the Sacred Heart Apostolate works to bring awareness to Catholics regarding the enthronement of homes to the Sacred Heart, which enables families to offer devotion and seek the protection of Jesus and Mary within their home environment. Further information on enthronement may be obtained by contacting Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Celesta Sinisi, sister moderator, at the Enthronement Guild office at 330-0248, or by accessing the Enthronement website at www.enthronement-sh.org.
All are invited to attend this special celebration and Holy Hour. Refreshments will be provided in the Parish Center afterwards.
