Catholic Social Services Offers Housing Education Seminars
As the mortgage crisis continues to pose financial challenges for an increasing number of homeowners, Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Scranton is taking steps to help them weather the storm.
Catholic Social Services will conduct housing education seminars in all areas of the Diocese to provide information on foreclosure prevention, adjustable mortgages, budget counseling and assistance programs offered by the state and federal governments.
The presenters will be Mike Coyle, housing counselor for Catholic Social Services, and Jesse Ergot from Lackawanna Neighborhood Housing Services.
The seminars, which will be helpful for homeowners as well as potential buyers, are free and open to all Pennsylvania residents. The first series of seminars will be held in Monroe County because this area has experienced the most actual and potential foreclosures. The schedule is:

Monday, Aug. 11, St. Ann Church, Tobyhanna
Monday, Aug. 18, St. Luke Church, Stroudsburg
Tuesday, Aug. 26, Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Broadheadsville

Each seminar will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Those who plan to attend are asked to reserve a spot by calling Catholic Social Services at 570-207-2283.

Mass To Recall Humanae vitae
The faithful of the Diocese of Scranton are invited to a Mass at St. Peter’s Cathedral this Friday, July 25, at 7 p.m. to celebrate the Fortieth Anniversary of Humanae vitae, Pope Paul VI’s prophetic encyclical on the sanctity of human life, promulgated on July 25, 1968.
This special Mass is offered in thanksgiving for this encyclical, which stands as a sign of contradiction in a contraceptive culture and for the graces that have been bestowed because of its teaching on life.

Resources Available on Fulton Sheen Cause
On Feb. 3, 2008, the cause for the beatification of the Servant of God, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, was officially sent to the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints at the Vatican. Since that time, there has been a renewed excitement about the cause of Archbishop Sheen’s beatification.
The Sheen Foundation, sponsored by Peoria Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, has various speakers – lay and ordained – available to give parish talks, missions or homilies about the life and witness of this Apostle of the Media.
