Christian Communities Gathering of Northeastern Pennsylvania

In response to the late Pope John Paul II’s call to prepare for the coming of the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, and in particular, to focus on deepening ecumenical relationships on the local level, in November 1999, a luncheon meeting was held in St. Peter’s Cathedral Rectory.

Invitations were sent to the leadership of a number of Christian traditions which reside within the boundaries of the Diocese of Scranton.

From that luncheon meeting came the commitment on the part of all gathered to develop a new ecumenical body for parts of Central and Northeastern Pennsylvania where our various groups have contact. Over time, this ecumenical body has become known as the Christian Communities Gathering of Northeastern Pennsylvania. About 10 Christian traditions and ecumenical agencies are regularly represented at the quarterly meetings and other activities.

In order to help members understand each other better, the group has been discussing, for the last year and a half, the hallmark document of the World Council of Churches, Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry. Although over 20 years old now, this document is still very important as a theological discussion guide to allow traditions to present their theological positions on Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry.

At each CCG meeting, representatives of each Christian tradition seated around this dialogue table have offered presentations on their tradition’s understanding of Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry. Currently, the group is still reflecting on the Ministry section of this document.

This group, unique in all of Pennsylvania, continues to provide representatives of various Christian traditions in our area the opportunity to get to know and understand each other better. The hope is that the work done by this group would be carried back to local parish communities. It would be on the local level that we hope to increase opportunities for shared prayer, serious theological dialogue and work for the betterment of humanity. What we do at this group we hope is someday mirrored on the local level.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service 2011

Each year, the Office of Ecumenism and Interfaith Affairs of the Diocese of Scranton and the Christian Communities Gathering of Northeastern Pennsylvania prepares a sample Interfaith Thanksgiving Prayer Service for local use.

The service we offer you this year, is the result of a collaborative effort between:

Rabbi Joe Mendelsohn, Spiritual Leader, Temple Israel, Scranton and President, Scranton Area Ministerium

The Reverend Philip A. Altavilla V.G., Director, Office of Ecumenism / Interfaith Affairs (Catholic Diocese ofScranton)

The Reverend Martin L. Cox, Jr., Susquehanna Conference, United Methodist Church

The Reverend C. Albert Wagaman, S.T.M., Northeastern Pennsylvania Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

The Reverend Rebecca Tanner, The Presbytery of Lackawanna, Presbyterian Church (USA) & Church Women United

Feel free to use any or all of the service as part of your Thanksgiving worship for this year and feel free to adapt the service as you see fit to your particular situation.  This service is presented for your consideration.

When planning a Thanksgiving Prayer Service, please be sure to collaborate with other members of your local ministerial groups.  If there are religious groups in your area - fellow Christians and followers of the other major World Religions – invite them to be part of the planning and the celebration of the prayer service.  This will certainly allow the experience to be all-inclusive of the different religious traditions in your area.  This may also a great opportunity to reach out to groups never before invited to participate in such events!

GUIDELINES

Collaboration with all participants is essential in planning ecumenical and/or interfaith gatherings.  However, as is often the case, the host community is sometimes asked to serve as the sole planner for such events.  The following guidelines and Order of Worship are meant to assist you in this task.

In planning an ecumenical service, one finds considerable common ground for most Christians, regarding acceptable scriptural passages, prayer forms and musical selections.  It is generally advisable, however, to avoid the use of Marian texts or the invocation of saints, since such practices are not common to all Christian traditions.

In the event that the service being planned might be interfaith in nature, with members of the other World’s Religions (i.e. Judaism, Islam, Baha’i, Hindu, Buddhism, etc.) participating, particular care should be taken in choosing scripture passages, prayers and musical selections.  One can always opt for a generic style of prayer out of respect for the religious tradition of the other participants.  Indeed, passages from the Hebrew Scriptures are most appropriate when a service includes both Jewish and Christian participants.

Nonetheless, an interfaith service does not necessarily have to exclude the use of passages from the Christian Scriptures; Trinitarian based forms of prayer or musical selections.  When such scripture passages, prayers or musical selections are employed, however, one must be sensitive to the fact that their nature and tone should not be offensive to any of the participants.

What’s more, the participants who are members of the other World’s Religions, in turn, should be invited to offer sacred readings, prayers and musical selections in keeping with their own faith tradition.  When carefully planned, such a prayer service both respects and celebrates the faith tradition of each participant.
