Allegations of sexual abuse of a minor,
one who is under eighteen years of age, by
ordained or lay personnel of the Diocese of
Scranton, may be made by calling the Victim
Assistance Coordinator (570-344-5216).
Allegations of such abuse may also be made
to the Diocesan Chancellor (570-207-2216) or
the Diocesan Vicar for Priests
(570-207-2269). Allegations may be written
to any one of the three at 300 Wyoming
Avenue, Scranton, PA 18503. Allegations made
to the Chancellor or Vicar for Priests will
be forwarded to the Victim Assistance
Coordinator.
What does the Victim Assistance
Coordinator do?
The Victim Assistance Coordinator
provides comprehensive support to those who
have experienced sexual abuse as minors
through the confidential services of
licensed mental health professionals and
experienced spiritual directors.
Who should contact the Victim Assistance
Coordinator?
A parent or
guardian who has reason to believe his or
her child has been sexually abused by any
representative of the Diocese of Scranton.
Any person who
as a child experienced sexual abuse by a
priest, deacon, religious, employee, teacher
or other representative of the Diocese of
Scranton.
An individual
who has reported to the Diocese allegations
of sexual abuse as a minor and is having
difficulty coping with feelings of anger and
depression or experiencing other signs of
emotional distress.
What happens when you make an initial
contact?
You should expect a confidential
consultation and interview with the Victim
Assistance Coordinator. If your allegation
involves a diocesan priest, the Victim
Assistance Coordinator will facilitate a
meeting with you and the Vicar for Priests,
if this has not already occurred.
What support and services are
provided?
The Diocese of Scranton is committed to
assisting you in the pursuit of emotional
and spiritual well-being. Depending on the
need, the Diocese, through the Victim
Assistance Coordinator, will:
Assist in
obtaining the services of mental health
practitioners, counselors and psychologists,
as well as spiritual counselors skilled in
helping victims of sexual abuse;
Arrange pastoral
visits or meetings to aid in the healing
process which may include spiritual
direction;
Coordinate
support services with mental health
providers and locate adjunct resources which
may include psychiatric services,
transportation resources and any other
services which directly enhance ability to
maintain a level of emotional well being;
and
Maintain contact
with victims/survivors to ensure that the
counseling provided is helpful.
