Newly Married Follow-up

"After the preparation of engagement and the sacramental celebration of marriage, the couple begins their daily journey toward the progressive actuation of the values and duties of marriage itself.  In the light of faith and by virtue of hope, the Christian family too shares, in communion with the church, in the experience of the earthly pilgrimage and manifestation of the kingdom of God." (Pope John Paul II, Familiaris consortio no. 65).

Foundations (http://www.foundationsnewsletter.com/home.html) is a bimonthly newsletter designed especial for newly married couples. It has short articles, exercises to build skills for strong marriages, and cartoons reflecting your humorous moments. Each issue features a topic couples grapple with during the first few years of marriage, addressing it from various angles including a spiritual perspective.

Couples who attend a diocesan Pre Cana conference or Engaged Encounter will receive a complementary 1-year subscription. Your parish or a family member may order a gift subscription or you may subscribe to Foundations yourself.

Pastoral or mentor couple follow-up
When a newly married visits with the parish pastoral staff member who helped them with marriage preparation or with their mentor couple during the first years of marriage, they have an opportunity to assess how the marriage is going, talk about issues they may or may not have anticipated as problematic, and ask for advice if they wish. Visits at six months, a year, and then annually for a few years or more can be very supportive no matter how strong the marriage is.
