Expanded Notre Dame H.S. Opens

On Dec. 22, 2004, Bishop Joseph F. Martino presided at a groundbreaking ceremony for a $10 million expansion of Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School in East Stroudsburg . On Aug. 31, 2005, less than nine months after construction began, Notre Dame Senior High students began classes in their new building.
The project began with a feasibility study during the summer of 2001. The study was conducted because

Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School was projecting a surplus of student applicants from their two elementary feeder schools, Notre Dame Elementary of East Stroudsburg and Monsignor McHugh Elementary of Cresco. The study concluded that more room would be needed at the high school and that Catholic families throughout the Pocono community were willing to support an expansion projection.
Very Rev.Thomas McLaughlin, V.F., president of the school’s Board of Pastors, said the expansion was desperately needed, noting that last year alone, the school had to turn away 40 applicants due to lack of space.
The new high school currently houses students in grades 9-12 and includes 10 new classrooms, two state-of-the-art science labs, a computer lab, wireless internet service and a library. A new arts center, which is slated for completion later this fall, will house a 750-seat theater.
The former Jr./Sr. high school, founded in 1967, has been transformed into Notre Dame Middle School for grades 5-8.
Grades Pre-K through 4 will remain at Notre Dame
Elementary School .There are 251 students currently enrolled in the high school, while 239 students are enrolled in the middle school.
Principal Jeffrey N. Lyons said, “Having our new high school is like a dream come true not only for the high school but for all the Catholic schools of Monroe County. We are now able to accept more students in each grade level of the Notre Dame School, and Monsignor McHugh School can expand knowing that all of their eighth-grade graduates will have a place in Notre Dame
High School. “Catholic education is available here in the Poconos thanks to the prayerful financial support of our Catholic community. The newness of the building is an attraction (and a very pleasant one), but the opportunity to share the word of God with all who come to our schools is the real joy.”
Notre Dame Jr./Sr. High School is supported by 11 parishes in Monroe County, including Christ the King, Blakeslee; Our Lady of the Lake, Pocono Pines; Our Lady of Victory, Tannersville; Our Lady Queen of Peace, Brodheadsville; St. Ann, Tobyhanna; St. Bernadette, Canadensis; St. John and St. Matt hew, East Stroudsburg; St. Luke, Stroudsburg; St. Mary of the Mount, Mount Pocono: and St. Rita, Gouldsboro.
