Marriage Protection Amendment Stalled
HARRISBURG – Supporters of the Pennsylvania
Marriage Protection
Amendment received the disappointing
news that SB 1250 was tabled and is now
stalled in the state Senate.
Sen. Michael Brubaker, the prime sponsor of
the bill, explained why in his statement on
the Senate floor:
“Our caucus has been informed by the Speaker
of the House that if Senate Bill 1250 is
sent to the House of Representatives, it
will be referred to the State Government
Committee. Our belief, based on the
information we have received from the House,
is that the Chairman of the State Government
Committee will not allow Senate Bill 1250 to
be considered by the committee in a timely
manner. If we can obtain an agreement from
the House leadership that Senate Bill 1250
would be considered, I have been assured by
our leadership that the Senate will consider
this legislation promptly. Given all these
facts, I very reluctantly make a motion that
Senate Bill 1250 be placed upon the table.”
While the future status of the bill is being
studied, the Pennsylvania Catholic
Conference is asking that gratitude be
expressed to the state senators who
supported SB 1250 in committee and behind
the scenes.
Please call the following senators who serve
districts in the Diocese of Scranton and
thank them for supporting the Marriage
Protection Amendment.
