Diocese and Employee
Councils Continue To Meet
Two more meetings have been held of Employee
Councils representing teachers and other
staff in Diocesan Catholic schools.
These sessions are part of the Employee
Relations Program, which is the format for
regular dialogue between the Diocese and
school employees. Its implementation is part
of the final decision that the Scranton
Diocese Association of Catholic Teachers (SDACT)
will not be recognized as a bargaining agent
for teachers.
The Employee Councils are comprised of
representatives chosen by their peers at the
schools in the four regional systems as well
as members of the regional system boards.
On June 9, the Employee Council of the St.
John Neumann Regional System met with system
board members and James Burke, Diocesan
director of human resources.
At this particular meeting, an agreement in
principle was reached concerning tuition
assistance, sick days and personal days for
teachers and support staff.
Discussion also continued on compensation
and health care issues.
A meeting with the Employee Council of the
Notre Dame Regional System was held on June
11. At this session, a dialogue began about
issues that the school employees would like
to address.
These issues will be reviewed by the Diocese
and the System Board and will be the basis
for future meetings.
Although school is out for the summer, Mr.
Burke said meetings of the Employee Councils
would continue.
“We are making a lot of progress, and we
intend to keep the momentum going,” he said.
