The Church Needs Your Help To Protect
Marriage
In 2006, the
Pennsylvania General Assembly considered a
Marriage Protection Amendment, but the bill
failed to pass because of insufficient
support in the State Senate. It is
anticipated that a Marriage Protection
Amendment will again be proposed in 2008,
and its success will likely depend on the
support of the State Senate. You can help to
protect marriage by contacting the State
Senators in the Diocese of Scranton right
now and telling them that:
“I strongly support a Marriage Protection Amendment
that will protect marriage as a union
between one man and one woman, and that will
also prohibit the creation of a legal
status, such as a “civil union,” that is
identical or substantially equivalent to
marriage for unmarried persons. Although
Pennsylvania
already has a Defense of Marriage Act, a
court in another state recently overturned a
similar law, and courts in several states
have redefined marriage to enable all types
of relationships to qualify as marriages.
The only guaranteed way to protect marriage
in
Pennsylvania
is an amendment to the state constitution. I
urge you to support such an amendment!”

would be most effective, but you can also
make a phone call or send a letter. This is
an urgent matter, so please make your voice
heard today! Your efforts to protect
marriage are greatly appreciated!
