The third of the Ordinaries came to Scranton from Cleveland, Ohio. He was
the Most Reverend Thomas C. O'Reilly, who had been ordained a Bishop on
February 16,1928, and took possession of his See three weeks later. His
particular achievement was to add the stamp of administrator to the office
of Bishop. With the advent of the Depression, this talent conferred
additional benefit upon the Church in Northeastern Pennsylvania by
minimizing the effects of financial hardship upon the still increasing
number of parishes, institutions, and religious communities. Unfortunately,
the increased burden of responsibility took its toll on the Bishop's health,
and his tenure was correspondingly shortened.
