Admission
to Aspirancy
(Applications
for the Permanent Diaconate Program
are not being accepted at present.) |
 |
Men
interested in the diaconate who feel they
meet all the requirements are to request
from the Director of the Office for the
Diaconate an application form which is to be
completed and returned along with the
following items:
-
Official College Transcript (or high school if applicant
did not attend college);
-
Pennsylvania State Police criminal record check (via
internet “PATCH” is easiest) and
Pennsylvania Child Abuse History
Clearance (original certificate);
-
Proof of legal residency in the diocese;
-
Copy of Baptismal record and Confirmation record (issued
within last six months) and copy of
birth certificate;
-
Copy of marriage record (where applicable) (issued
within last six months)
-
Personal handwritten statement from wife (where
applicable) indicating her initial
consent for her husband’s application
to the Diaconate Formation Program;
-
A recent photo of the applicant and, if married, of
applicant with his wife;
-
A written report of the Rector of any previous house
in which the candidate has spent time in
formation,
including explicit reference to
the evaluation of the candidate and the
votes he received;
-
Typewritten essay (200-300 words) on “What Is My
Understanding of Diaconate Ministry?”
-
Letter from Pastor
After
reception of the application and the return of
the pastor’s, employer’s, and other
recommendation forms (which will be sent out
by the Office for the Diaconate upon
the receipt of the application), the applicant
and his wife will be interviewed by a
designated representative of the
Director. The applicant will do
an on-line personal evaluation
instrument called the “Ministry
Potential Discerner Self-Assessment
Survey”. The Admissions
Committee will review each applicant’s
file and decide whether he should continue
the process, wait until a future time, or
terminate the process. The decision of
the Admission Committee will be sent to the
applicant.
For
those who continue the process, an
appointment will be arranged for a
tape-recorded interview using the “Deacon
Perceiver” instrument.
If the results of this instrument are
basically suitable:
-
a
psychologist will meet with the
applicant and his wife to administer a
battery of standard psychological and
personality-profile tests, and a
marriage inventory test;
-
the
applicant will also submit the results
of a physical examination to the
Director.
The
Admissions Committee will again review the applications
and make a final consensus recommendation to
the Bishop, who makes a final determination
on admissions based on all available
information.
The entire body of information is
held in strict confidence and will
become the property of the Diocese of
Scranton, and will not be accessible to
the applicant.
The
Director will inform the applicant and his
pastor of the final decision.
