Often times we think of the
important decisions and actions in
life as those done for God. However,
there are many small decisions and
actions we face everyday that are
not insignificant for our life of
faith. How do we treat people we
encounter on a daily basis? Do I
acknowledge people when I pass them
in the mall or on the street? How do
I act when I am driving a car? These
questions are not insignificant if
we strive to do everything for the
glory of God.
I propose that this Lenten season
with all of its traditional
practices serve as an extended
examination of conscience. Under the
guidance of the teachings of the
Church, let us ask ourselves if we
“do everything for the glory of
God.” The Lord stands ready to help
us with this examination. All we
need do is turn to Him. In the
Gospels the Lord always healed those
who turned to Him in faith. As part
of this examination, I encourage all
to take full advantage of the
Sacrament of Penance so that our
hearts and minds may be purified to
once again celebrate the
Resurrection of the Lord.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Joseph F. Martino, D.D.,
Hist. E.D.
Bishop of Scranton
