Beloved in Christ,

A young person on a recent occasion of my conferring Confirmation expressed the idea of “Our Grateful Faith” to me, and I then and there considered it an ideal theme for our Diocesan Annual Appeal this year.

The thought is simple enough. If we have faith, we will have hearts filled with gratitude to God. When we have that kind of gratitude, we will show it by giving to others as God has given to us. I am certain that your faith, your following of Christ, is fulfilled frequently, even daily, by the gifts you bestow on others. And, I am most thankful for your past gifts to the Annual Appeal.

I know the blessings of stewardship are many, yet the needs of our Diocese continue to be great. Thousands, yes, literally thousands, of children, women and men with every kind of need are reaching out to you. It is with certitude and thankfulness that I come to you confidently to ask for your generosity to the 2008 Our Grateful Faith Annual Appeal.

The Appeal goal this year is $5,300,000 and I am positive your gift will help make this goal a reality.  If there is a better and more inclusive way to practice “Our Grateful Faith,” that is, to give to others as God has given to us, I don’t know what it is.

Again, with profound gratitude for all your past support, I ask our God to bless you and your families and ask that you will have the grace always to remember to go back and give thanks to God for His goodness to you.

With every blessing and kind personal regards, I am

Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Joseph F. Martino, D.D., Hist. E.D., Bishop of Scranton
